Earth's
Fidgeting Climate - "Is human activity warming the
Earth or do recent signs of climate change signal
natural variations? In this feature article,
scientists discuss the vexing ambiguities of our
planet's complex and unwieldy climate..."
Sept. 8, 2000 - Record-setting
Ozone Hole -
Antarctica's ozone hole has
expanded to cover an area three
times larger than the United
States. A NASA spectrometer has
detected an Antarctic ozone
"hole" (what
scientists call an "ozone
depletion area") that is
three times larger than the
entire land mass of the United
States - the largest such area
ever observed...
Engineered
Trees Standing Out in Biotech Debate - As if "Frankenfoods"
aren't enough of a concern for biotechnology opponents, now
it's "Frankenforests" that are emerging as a major
concern among increasingly vocal activists. Genetically
engineered trees that express certain potentially desirable
traits are being studied in the United States, Israel and
Canada. One of the goals is to develop trees that would be
more productive and more environmentally friendly...
LANDFILLS:
Hazardous to the Environment - The earth
is a limited space. Creating waste is unsustainable. If
we continue to build landfills, we will eventually run
out of land - although it may take thousands of years,
it is inevitable. Even today, we are drinking water that
is filtered through landfills full of household
hazardous and industrial wastes. To protect our health
and the environment we must meet the challenge to safely
recycle all materials...
Groundwater
& Surface Water: Understanding the Interaction -
Water. It's vital for all of us. We depend on its good
quality-and quantity-for drinking, recreation, use in
industry and growing crops. It also is vital to sustaining
the natural systems on and under the earth's surface.
Groundwater is a hidden resource. At one time, its purity
and availability were taken for granted. Now contamination
and availability are serious issues. Some interesting facts
to consider...
EPA
Proposes A New Rule to Protect Underground Sources of
Drinking Water from Wastewater Disposal in South Florida
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just
proposed a new rule to further protect underground sources
of drinking water in South Florida. Why only South Florida?
Florida is the only State in the country that disposes of
domestic wastewater through deep injection wells, typically
2,000 to 3,400 feet deep. The wastewater is injected into
deep geologic formations, in some locations known as the
"Boulder Zone". The Boulder Zone is located below
groundwater supplies that are currently used or may be used
in the future as a source of drinking water. Drinking water
supply sources are typically a few hundred feet deep and,
therefore, far above the Boulder Zone...
