Reynolds' complex may become school

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Burt Reynolds' former ranch and movie studio may one day be filled with school books and children. On Wednesday, the Palm Beach County School Board voted 6-1 to buy the actor's 153-acre Jupiter Farms complex for $3.85 million. The deal takes the property out the trust it had been in since Reynolds filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. Included in the complex are production studios where Reynolds shot scenes from "Smokey and the Bandit" and "B.L. Stryker," and the chapel where he married Loni Anderson in 1988. There is enough land for an elementary, middle and high school, but no construction is planned for at least five years.

Man Wanted In Florida Arrested In Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (Reuters) - A U.S. man wanted in Florida for allegedly murdering and dismembering his girlfriend in 1994 has been arrested in Costa Rica, police said Saturday.

The man was identified as Carlos Miranda, of Cuban origin with U.S. citizenship. He was arrested in San Jose late Friday by Costa Rican police, supported by Interpol agents accompanied by a U.S. embassy official, local police said.

Miranda is wanted in Dade County in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, whose dismembered body was found in the trunk of a car abandoned in Miami, police said. They did not give the name of the victim.

Miranda faces an extradition hearing in Costa Rica. - Sunday August 1 12:11 AM ET
