Bicyclist Victim of Hit-and-Runs
10:21 AM ET 09/23/99
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A bicyclist knocked off a highway overpass by a hit-and-run
driver was repeatedly struck on the road below by other cars that scattered parts of his
body for hundreds of feet. Only one motorist stopped, after getting a flat tire due to
debris, police said.
The cyclist was riding on an overpass early Wednesday when he was struck by a
vehicle and thrown 20 feet onto the Florida Turnpike, which has a 70-mph speed limit.
Police estimate the man was struck by at least six vehicles.
His remains were spread along 375 feet of highway, police said. He was not
immediately identified.
``They just kept going,'' said police Detective Norris Butler.
``The first two or three had to have known it was a body because of the
clothing.''
A motorist driving a car carrier told police he thought he had hit the mangled
carcass of a deer.
