Dune Destruction

"Are State, County and Destin City officials turning their backs on our Dunes and natural resources while developers destroy beaches and dunes?"

AUGUST 1999

Here is a series of photos showing the progression of the leveling of the dunes by Silver Shells Condos in Destin.

Silver Shells Condominium in Destin, Florida - Start of path from pool to beach...

Beginning of dune-cut path...

Dune is cut for path from pool to beach.  You can clearly see the cross-section of the dune...

Another shot of dune-cut path...

Sign stating "Dune Restoration Area - Please keep off" posted adjacent to dune-cut.  Vast sums of money were spent restoring these dunes after Opal...

You can see clearly see the end of the see oats where excavation begins...

This site is the Old Hwy 98 roadbed.  Silver Shells has merely leased this site from the city of Destin.  The people of Destin still own every grain of sand that has been hauled off from it...

... another shot of a dune-cut, tons of snow-white sand have been hauled away.

...another view of where Old hwy 98 roadbed was.

Tons of sand have been excavated and hauled away, which appear to be a violation of the Law.
