Elian
Seized, Returned to Dad -
"Seized by armed agents before dawn, Elian Gonzalez
was reunited with his father today after a
frantic and forceful end to a five-month
standoff between the government and the Cuban
boy's Miami relatives. Federal agents seized the
boy from the home of his Miami relatives, firing
pepper spray into an angry crowd as they took
away the crying and screaming 6-year-old boy for
a reunion with his Cuban father..."
AOL give
privacy an expiration date - AOL tells its users that their 'opt
out' privacy preferences have expired -- and need to be
renewed. An America Online policy is again
putting privacy issues on the front burner. The nation's
leading access provider recently started sending e-mails
to customers informing them that the privacy preferences
they signed up for a year ago - the ones telling the
company not to collect or distribute information about
their accounts or online habits - have
"expired..."
Calling all
geeks, it's festival time - Tim McEachern is a true believer, and
he's trying to convert a newcomer to the fold. "See, you can't even bring
yourself to say it," he prompts. "Go
ahead." Ggg ... Gggg ... Geek ... Geek Pride. Geek Pride? Is this somebody's idea of
an April Fool's joke? Well, no, not exactly. The first Geek
Pride Festival hits town this weekend, with a gathering
tonight at the Modern Lounge on Lansdowne Street and an
all-day event tomorrow at the Park Plaza Castle on
Columbus Avenue. So just what is a Geek Pride Festival?
With the motto "Be there and be square..."
Business
plans trampled in Internet gold rush - The deluge of venture
capital that has generously flowed from investors in
recent months has apparently had one unfortunate side
effect: It's swept common sense from the minds of
entrepreneurs. In their rush to get
funding, would-be captains of industry are hurriedly
cobbling together business plans that lack critical
elements. As never before, they are omitting such basic
things as the names of their competitors, the background
of their management team and their proposed channels of
distribution...
Report
says Internet improving school life for college students
- A report on the growth of college online services said
that increased use of the Internet is improving school
life for students on and off campus. In just a year, the
number of colleges offering online degrees doubled, said
the report from Market Data Retrieval, a Dun & Bradstreet
educational research company. But the study showed colleges
also spent more money on technology and added computers
to dorms and classrooms...
Daily
Web surfing now the norm - Logging onto the
Internet is becoming an essential daily activity for
many Americans, according to the latest research in
an ongoing study of Web usage. More than 61% of home
Internet users go online every day - often several times
a day - compared with 46.7% in mid-1997 and 57.3% at
the end of 1998, says the study, out Wednesday from
Strategis Group, a market research and consulting firm
based in Washington, D.C. "We're becoming accustomed
to having information at our fingertips," says
John Zahurancik, vice president for broadband research
at Strategis...
E-tax
Commission Debates Physical Presence - The Advisory Commission on
Electronic Commerce is trying to connect over nexus and
is getting nowhere. With just one day remaining to find
agreement and create a document to send to Congress with
its recommendations on Internet tax policy, the
19-member commission is struggling to reconcile the
physical world with the Internet. The Latin word for connection, nexus
is a fuzzy legal concept that bears largely on taxation
and how it should be implemented given the rise of the
Internet...
Daughter: Reagan's Alzheimer's Bad
-
Despite the hopes of well wishers, former
President Reagan has not been spared the deteriorating effects of
Alzheimer's disease, his daughter Maureen said Monday, the night
before she was to testify about the disease before a Senate
subcommittee. "He's doing very well, but the disease is just awful,'' she
said. "It just gets worse every day...''
