17, 2001 - Group
says MS is playing monopoly again - Reuters,
WASHINGTON--With a U.S. appeals court still reviewing a
landmark antitrust ruling against Microsoft, the software
giant's rivals on Thursday accused it of plotting a scheme
to monopolize the Internet. Procomp, a group funded by
Microsoft's competitors, charged Microsoft with planning
to use its new Windows XP operating system and .Net
strategy to extend its monopoly. The group said Microsoft
plans to use its dominant Windows operating system and
Internet Explorer browser to force consumers to adopt its
new .Net Internet platform. "Microsoft's current
strategy to extend and preserve its monopoly position is
.Net, which can most basically be described as Microsoft
Windows for the Internet," the group said...

MS
To Users: Pay Up - By MITCH WAGNER
InternetWeek, Has Microsoft become more aggressive
in enforcing licensing terms? Microsoft is cracking
down on enterprise customers it believes aren't paying
for all the software they're using, calling on them to
perform audits and stick to a narrow interpretation of
license terms, according to several big Microsoft
shops. "These days, the only thing that Microsoft
is interested in discussing with its customers is
licensing issues," said John Luludis, CIO of
Danzas AEI, an international shipping company with
about 10,000 Windows desktops. "We spend a lot of
time and resources constantly proving license
compliance, while we try to plan an optimum
configuration to deal with the rising cost of
ownership related to Microsoft's products..."

01, 2001 - What
stock is Bill Gates buying these days? - By
Rebecca Buckman, WSJ Interactive Edition,
Microsoft recently ran a stock-picking contest for
charity, inviting people to match wits online with
company Chairman Bill Gates. Results from the first
round show Gates may be better at building software
than investing. The return on his picks, including
shares of Microsoft (of course) and his pal Warren
Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, ranked him 24,355th, out
of the more than 96,000 participants. A brilliant
multibillionaire, Gates had a loss for the
several-week contest period of 2.65 percent...
