Every Monday morning a cashier at Eckerd's drugstore
greets me with these words. A manager gives her a key
and she fishes $3 and change from the cash drawer and
pays me for the copies of The Kansas City Star sold
the previous week. I pick up the 10 or 12 unsold papers
and throw them in my car, next to the returns from the
supermarket, the doughnut shop and the Texaco station...

.COMS - The .coms are turning into .bombs.
The high-flying Internet stocks, so recently the big
favorites of investors, are crashing and burning
faster than you can say "IPO." Many of the
online companies that had their initial public
offerings within the past two years and watched
their stocks zoom higher are now trading below their
IPO prices. And even as the technology-packed Nasdaq
composite index stemmed a losing streak by turning
up yesterday, many of the individual stocks in the
Internet sector continued to slump -- with close to
a dozen hitting all-time lows...
A Total Eclipse
of the Gun? - Gun-related violence
in America has become almost numbingly routine. This
week alone, a first-grader in Michigan shot a
six-year-old girl, and five white men were shot outside
Pittsburgh by a black man in a furious rampage -- over a
broken door in his apartment building. Each ghastly new
round of gun violence brings back memories of the
killings last April at Columbine High School that left
15 students dead and made the gun-control debate a top
policy concern for many people in America...
