Wear
this Badge or Be Interrogated - Themestream

2001,
by Kimberly
Moore, Imagine this scenario. You are a
law-abiding homeschooling citizen. You decide to take
your children out for a nature walk and a visit to the
public library. suddenly, you and your children are
approached by a uniformed police officer who demands
to know what you are doing with children of school-age
on a public street between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3
p.m. You explain. He demands to know why you are not
wearing your duly designated badge...

What
happened to employees with good work ethic? - By
Bob Levin & Joe Rosse, Copyright © 1998 Boulder
County Business Report, "How do you find
employees with a good work ethic?" We're asked
that question every time we give a hiring workshop.
What has happened to the employee who works hard,
attends to customers, and puts in extra effort without
whining about it "not being in my job
description." Is the work ethic dead? ...

HOW
CONGRESS FEEDS THE BUILDING FRENZY - "Virtually
all publicly funded convention centers, stadiums, arenas,
and other infrastructure projects are financed with debt
instruments that are exempt from federal income taxes, and
often from state income taxes if the investor resides in
the state that issued the bonds. Allowing investors in
these bonds to earn interest income that is exempt from
federal income taxes enables the municipalities to borrow
at lower interest rates..."

CALIFORNIA'S
ENERGY CRISIS: what a fantastic muddle
- Bruce
Sterling, Feedmag.com, Bits versus atoms. Clicks
versus bricks. It's very 2001 -- all about the New
Economy getting hauled from its Volvo and curbstomped
by the Old Economy. California's problem is that
energy is not bits. You can't burn bits to keep warm.
A natural gas pipeline is not the Internet Cloud.
There are networks, and then there are networks. This
is what comes of trustingly treating a rusty gas
pipeline like the warm and kindly Internet...

on technology, AIDS and why Malthus was wrong
- By Paul Hofheinz, WSJ
Interactive Edition, He may be best known for
founding the world's most successful software
manufacturer, but Microsoft Corp. CEO Bill Gates likes
to spend time mulling over the future. At Microsoft,
he is famous for taking month-long "think
time" sabbaticals, where he retreats to an
isolated cabin to ponder the fate of the world--and
the computing industry, of course...

Are
web sites going to make printed brochures obsolete?
- Craig Koopersmith, Huston
Business Journal "Is the Internet relegating printed brochures to the
Model T museum? Powerful. The Internet is that and more,
boldly redefining how businesses communicate with each
other and with consumers. From its obscure research tool
origins, it now connects the world instantaneously..."

I
am Cyborg and I love it - By Janet Lafler,
Salon.com, My portable insulin pump never strays from my
side, but I feel more human with the technology than without
it. I have been assimilated. I am hooked up to a
microelectronic device 24 hours a day and I love it. I hope
to remain hooked up to this device, or a more advanced
version of it, for the rest of my life...

Steps Up Assault on Gun Owners, Will YOUR State Be Next? -
California has become a socialist state with the accompanying oppressive
taxation and police state mentality. This proposed law, which is designed to
effectively end handgun ownership in CA, is a perfect example of what we can
expect from a state that has NO respect for either the Constitution or
individual freedom. I can easily see some Miami "socialist legislator"
proposing the same law in FL. We need to be alert to those that want to end
private ownership of firearms and do it through this type of politically correct
"gun safety" legislation. - Dan
