wrote last week's column, an attempt to make the most of
Microsoft's shift toward software by subscription, I knew it
would be flame bait. Even those who didn't understand the new
Software Assurance licensing plan were decrying it. So instead
of piling it on, why not try to see the silver lining?
Microsoft is very unlikely to back down, because software by
subscription is key to its .Net distributed computing
model--and Microsoft really has bet the company on .Net. So, I
thought, I'll lay out the argument behind the inevitable and
watch the sparks fly...
