Shockwave Player Going 3D
ALIAS|WAVEFRONT,
DISCREET, NXVIEW, AND SOFTIMAGE EMBRACE INTEL AND
MACROMEDIA DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS
3D Software Companies to Use Macromedia Shockwave
Player As A Primary 3D Delivery Platform for the Web
SIGGRAPH 2000, New
Orleans, Louisiana—July 25, 2000—Macromedia,
Inc. (NASDAQ: MACR), and Intel Corporation today
announced that 3D software developers Alias|Wavefront,
Discreet Logic, NxView Technologies, Inc., and
Softimage have all pledged their support for the 3D
technology Intel and Macromedia are developing for the
Internet.
Alias|Wavefront,
Discreet, NxView, and Softimage, the leading providers
of 3D software tools and content services, are
committed to using the future 3D-enhanced Macromedia
Shockwave Player as a primary delivery platform for
the Web. With the future version of the Shockwave
Player, all of these companies will have a
widely-deployed platform to playback their creative 3D
content.
Earlier today, Intel
and Macromedia announced they are teaming up to
deliver 3D software technology for the Internet (see
separate release). The companies will integrate
Intel's Internet 3D Graphics technology into a future
version of the Macromedia Shockwave Player, enabling
the player to display high quality 3D graphics on the
Internet.
As the world's
leading innovator of professional 3D modeling and
animation technology, Alias|Wavefront develops
software for the film and video, games, interactive
media, industrial design, and visualization markets
through its Maya and Studio product lines.
"Customers who
use our products for creating their 3D animation and
designs will greatly benefit from the technology being
developed by Intel and Macromedia," said Mike
Wilson, director of Alias|Wavefront's Maya Interactive
Group. "With the broad penetration of the
Macromedia Shockwave Player, adding 3D playback
functionality will provide an attractive and well
established delivery platform for our customers'
content."
Discreet Logic's 3D
Studio MAX is the award-winning professional 3D
modeling and animation solution for PCs.
"Discreet's 3D
Studio MAX remains the most popular solution for
creating 3D Web animations," states Phillip
Miller, senior director of Discreet software products.
"We are working with both Intel and Macromedia to
ensure the vast number of 3D Studio MAX animators will
have a direct method for bringing their rich 3D
content to the Web in this versatile new
technology."
NxView Technologies
is becoming the dominant 3D provider of e-business
solutions, services and technology via the Internet,
Intranets and Extranets.
"For those of us
who have been pioneering 3D on the Web, it's
gratifying to have companies such as Intel and
Macromedia join the effort. With Intel's technical
knowledge and Macromedia's massive installed base of
developers and Shockwave Players, pervasive 3D on the
Web should be greatly accelerated," said Myles A.
Owens III, chairman and CEO, NxView Technologies, Inc.
SOFTIMAGE|XSI, the
next-generation 3D software from Softimage, is already
winning awards for its innovative technology and
workflow while maintaining the legendary Softimage
intuitiveness and productivity.
"Softimage
artists will have a smooth path for publishing their
3D content to the Web," said Michael Sheasby,
director of internet business development at Softimage.
"The ubiquity of the Macromedia Shockwave Player
ensures that the technology from Intel and Macromedia
will be available on a significant number of machines
connected to the Web. Artists will have a huge
audience waiting for the content they produce."
The Intel Internet 3D
Graphics-enhanced Shockwave Player will enable the
next generation of bandwidth-friendly, interactive
games, entertainment, and online shopping. The
combined technologies will bring the first
interactive, streaming, multiuser 3D capabilities
online via the most widely deployed multimedia player,
taking Web 3D from niche applications to mainstream
uses.
