SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - One of the most widely used multimedia
players on the Web is going 3-D. Macromedia, Inc. and Intel Corp. are joining development forces
to incorporate Intel's 3-D graphics technology into Macromedia's
Shockwave Player, the companies said in a joint announcement
Monday.
Shockwave Player - which displays Web content, such as multiuser
games, interactive product simulations and online entertainment
is used by more than 130 million people worldwide, the companies
said.
The 3-D feature, expected to be in place by next year, ``will
allow 3-D to take off on the Web,'' said Steve Spina, director of
technology marketing at Intel's Architecture Lab.
The joint effort ``will bring the realism and impact of
interactive 3-D to e-merchandising, e-learning and entertainment on
the Web,'' added Diane Rogers, vice president of product management
for San Francisco-based Macromedia.
The 3-D feature will be automatically updated when a user runs
the player from a Web site.
