WISHBOX.COM

On NPR - Noah speaks with Casey Weiss, Chairman of Generation Y at wishbox.com. The website is a new gift registry designed for children and teenagers. The idea was to give young people an opportunity to register for gifts so money isn't wasted on unwanted presents. Casey Weiss's father and friends started the site, and hired her as a consultant. They wanted her expertise as a young person. Wishbox-dot-com has now broadened beyond a sole focus on material gifts. The site encourages people to be creative, by wishing for things like world peace.  Click here to hear the audio

e-Holiday countdown

OCT. 27, 1999

I hate the idea of acknowledging the impending holiday season as much as you do, but as far as I can tell it’s been Christmas for months now. At least as far as the bevy of e-merchants trying to attract our money and attention are concerned.

We’ve been getting flacked by the e-commerce crowd for a while, and that means you’re about to start getting deluged, too. Watch for endless variations on computer themed Christmas trees. It’s not enough that everyone wants to cash in on the dot com revolution. Now they want to attach a Santa Claus to it, too.

So, even though it’s not yet Halloween, today we begin a series of reports called E-Holiday Countdown. In this episode, we look at a business we ran across at Internet World last month. It’s called I’veBeenGood.com, and it’s a gift registry for families. No more guessing what kind of perfume Aunt Belinda wants. Since the business model wasn’t readily apparent for this one, we thought it well-embodied all the other dot coms out there — and was a good way to kick off the season. (Another, similar business crossed our desks last week, Wishbox.com. It wouldn’t be the Web at the end of the millennium if there weren’t myriad versions on a theme.

It’ll take till after the holidays to see who succeeds in this e-commerce game. Until then, play along with us. Have something you want us to test or check out online? Tell us what you want us to look at and we will.
