Game Development à la Mod - Hacker Minh Le's Counter-Strike
is the stuff of media execs' dreams -- an over-the-transom blockbuster.,
By Geoff Keighley, Business 2.0 Issue, Like a lot of college
seniors, Minh Le had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. In June
2000, on the verge of graduating with a computer science degree from
Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, the 23-year-old
Le really would admit to only one career goal: He didn't want to work in
a cubicle. If pushed about his ambitions, though, he might shyly point
to a computer game he had built in the basement of his parents' suburban
home and given away over the Internet...

‘Auto
Focus’: Bob Crane’s dark side - By David Elliott, SPECIAL TO
MSNBC.COM, Bob Crane, the subject of “Auto Focus,” heard that
“likability is nine-tenths” of success, and he yearns to be a new Jack
Lemmon. He is more like Gig Young without the oily sexiness — Greg
Kinnear plays Crane as a boyish nice guy who will finish last. In Paul
Schrader’s movie, Kinnear brings just enough depth to Crane that we feel
tiny spins of pathos...

Art: What's Original, Anyway?
- By Kendra Mayfield,
WiredNews, If current
copyright laws had been on the
books when jazz musicians were
borrowing riffs from other
artists in the 1930s and Looney
Tunes illustrators were creating
cartoons in the 1940s, entire
art genres such as hip-hop,
collage and Pop Art might never
have existed. The debate over
whether artists can use
copyrighted materials entered
the national spotlight this week
as the Supreme Court heard
opening arguments in Eldred v.
Ashcroft, a case in which
plaintiffs are seeking to
overturn the 1998 Copyright Term
Extension Act...

Are prosecutors going after
Winona because they failed at
getting O.J.? By Dahlia Lithwick
SLATE.COM, If Winona Ryder
hadn’t been cast in this movie,
it would have gone straight to
video. Scratch that. It would
never even have made it to
Lifetime, Television for Women.
“Doe-eyed girl shoplifts at
Saks, spends three years in
prison”? Please. There are only
two possible reasons that an
alleged Beverly Hills
shoplifting incident has
launched a felony prosecution,
complete with press conferences,
photo ops, and a spin campaign
worthy of a summer blockbuster:
Either the Los Angeles district
attorney’s office is seeking
payback for the O.J. Simpson
trial, or District Attorney
Steve Cooley is gunning for an
Oscar...
