Gaming MODs 2 Die 4

Doom proved that fan communities are
capable of creating just about anything given the
proper tools. Hundreds of levels, unofficial patches,
and other tweaks flooded the Internet at a time when
the fastest home connection was a 14.4Kbps modem. This
could have been an isolated phenomenon, but as more
companies released editing tools with their games, a
cottage industry formed faster than anyone could have
imagined.
Now, dozens of web sites devotedly
track the new levels, mods, total conversions, and
other add-ons that hundreds of designers develop. The
one-person creations of the past have been all but
replaced by collective efforts that are extensively
beta-tested by core fans - a process that often leads
to free add-ons that are more stable than some
commercial products. Many design teams issue press
releases when their projects are completed. A few even
see retail distribution of their creations by the
original game's publisher.
Because so much goes on in the mod communities, the
average gamer has trouble keeping up with everything.
That's where this feature comes in. Although our list
isn't exhaustive, we tested dozens of mods and total
conversions for some of the most popular games on the
market - Unreal Tournament, Quake III: Arena,
Half-Life, Age of Empires II, and The Sims - to find
out which are worthy of your time. There are far too
many mods for each game for us to look at them all in
depth, so if your favorite isn't listed, it's likely
that we dropped it from the list to make room for a
mod we felt deserved more exposure. Let the games
begin!
