In a letter to the editor of the NWF Daily News, Craig Otto (Rally to vote, 6Aug, 2000) asked for comments from readers on his idea to place ribbons around trees to help get out the vote. Here are mine.

Patriotic words, catchy slogans and ribbons are fine, but we need to do a lot more.

Voters need to study the issues, listen to what the candidates say, meet them, and then come to intelligent conclusions on who is sincere and who is best qualified to govern us.

There are many sources, such as: newspaper articles, interviews, letters, and editorials; radio talk shows; public forums; government meetings; and local websites. Some of these sources are biased, but by gathering information from enough sources, you can usually tell which ones are biased and draw your own conclusions as to why.

If we just blindly march to the polls uninformed we will only elect the ones who have plastered the most signs around town, and we will continue to be governed by those with the most money who continue to look after those who have given them that money.

Our vote is more than a freedom and a right; it is a responsibility that we need to take seriously.
