Fort Walton Beach city councilman Chuck Kelley, who is also the vice chairman of the local Metropolitan Planning Organization, was on radio station WFTW on August 22, 2000. At that time he again stated that the Department of Transportation had directed the FWB city council to increase the carrying capacity of US Highway 98 through the city.

The truth of the matter is contained in the following excerpt from a letter signed by Mr. H. E. Prescott, FDOT District 3 secretary:

“The issue of traffic congestion on US98 is an issue of local concern. While traffic congestion is of concern to the department, our office does not have authority to require such improvements.”

Mr. Kelley can be forgiven for not understanding basic principles of traffic management when he argues that Around the Mound will improve the flow of traffic on Highway 98 through Fort Walton Beach. But, as vice chairman of the local MPO which sets priorities for road projects in our area, he cannot be forgiven for continually misrepresenting the position of the Department of Transportation on Around the Mound.

Whatever his motives, Mr. Kelley should resign as vice-chairman of the MPO immediately.
