The Freedom Forum What is Freedom? From: Pat Baska CommentsWhat is freedom? We hear many words spoken about freedom, liberty, etc, yet none seem to know the basic principles. They say we must promote "democracy" as if a democracy is the source of freedom. This is at best a sophism and at worst an outright lie. In a democracy, anything goes. What the majority wants, it gets. What happens when the majority wants your property, or even your children? This is the inherent problem with democracy, there are no guarantees of individual liberty. You say "I have my rights!" and you are correct. However not because of democracy. Our Founders gave us a Constitutional Republic, which means we have a Constitution, or set of rules, for the government to follow. Once we allow government to overstep its' bounds (the limits put upon it in the Constitution) we put our freedom at risk, as the more government we have the less control we have over our own lives. So we must come to the conclusion that the essence of freedom is the limitation of government. ______ Last changed: March 04, 2008
