The Freedom Forum Re: When we first moved to "THE BEACH" we were so proud...From: Jan Theus CommentsWhen we first moved to "THE BEACH" we were so proud of our Fort Walton Beach address and promptly went to the city council meetings just to meet our representatives and see what was going on. That was during the push to build a second Brooks Bridge using city bond purchases instead of waiting for the D.O.T. to determine that the change was necessary. (Another of the city fiascos which I can proudly say after I wrote tons of letters to legislators and others, I felt that I helped in a small way to stop from saddling the city with a huge debt service.) At one of the first meetings we attended, the then Mayor Trienery asked for volunteers for several city programs. We eagerly raised our hands and marched over to the city secretary to sign up and were told we were not "eligible" to do any volunteer work for F.W.B. ...WE WERE FROM "the ISLAND" arghhh and....HORRORS!!! So we just adopted a mile of beach to clean up every morning a 7 a.m. where the Blue Dolphin Public Park now is. We loved seeing the hermit crabs early in the morning...they are now nearly non-existent since the introduction of a more consistent way of cleaning up using the beach sweepers. Now the city council wants to tell us what is good for the Island?? We live there. Perhaps only 6 months of the year but we aren't there to use, abuse or neglect the most precious thing we own.
