Your editorial and insulting cartoon in yesterday’s paper prove you still haven’t gotten it right about the Island Center and its opponents. At least two county commissioners were replaced because they wouldn’t listen to the voters. Their replacements won by solid margins (despite the fuzzy math in another of your recent editorial), and will immediately move to stop the building of this center. A third new commissioner says he has problems with the center as it is now planned. There’s a message here if you want to see it. I put in many hours in the sun gathering petitions and listening to why people were angry. It wasn’t because they wanted to keep things as they are, or keep the coast for retirees, or keep the island green. They were angry that their elected officials wouldn’t listen to their objections, wouldn’t let them vote on an issue that affected them all, and couldn’t do anything about the traffic problems on Okaloosa Island except put up a Conference Center. Before too many of us get excited about a pretty new building lets continue to examine the reasons this center is being built, who will benefit, and who will be hurt.
