The way the Daily News promotes the Conference Center you'd think they gave birth to it...

Again, you can see their latest pro-conference center propaganda in today's Sunday edition. You never see any anti-conference center headlines or editorials. The only thing that they have published that would indicate a balanced perspective on the conference center is what Bill Campbell and Del Stone wrote, and the DN management went way out of their way to write a long disclaimer for that!  Come on guys, tell me I'm wrong here.

Seems to me I recall the DN using the Cato Institute and Heritage Foundation (HF) as a BIG resource for information, but they conveniently overlook the reports Cato, HF and other "think tanks" did on corporate welfare, and how bad and unprofitable publicly owned conference centers are, and how government should not be in the convention center business.  The DN's parent company has Libertarian roots and philosophy, but their actions whistle a different tune.  Seems to me they are trying encourage the wholesale abuse of government power, not counter it, and since their parent company Freedom Communications owns all the major local newspapers in this county that seems to be a mighty powerful position they are in - one that can easily be abused.  Hey Tom, let me make this simple for you:

  1. Conference Center BAD -- it's corporate welfare;
  2. Less taxes, Less government GOOD -- makes freedom grow!

I'll tell you what's got them going again is that on Nov 28th, Doug Hutcheson, Shirley Ransom and whomever are going to motion to kill the THORNS* Conference Center, ...I mean, the conference center.

Hey DN, you turned your paper into a tool for propaganda for the power crowd contrary to your claims of "...upholding the quest for liberty that so consumed R.C. Hoiles (Founder of Freedom Communications)." That cartoon mockery in your commentary section was a shear display of insulting arrogance to the thousands of people who oppose the conference center and current BCC policy decisions (By the way, who are the two suited guys supposed to be, the guys who "know better" how to spend our tax dollars than us? Or are they the same group who arranged the 54 acres "sweetheart" deal?).  You forgot to tell your "artist" that composed that cartoon that he forgot to include the guy in a minivan who works everyday to support his family and put kids through college, because he, too, is part of those characters that oppose that center and everything about it.

You don't mind supporting a BCC that dips it's grubby hands into the public trough every chance it gets!  And that's real nice of the commission to make those extra considerations such as traffic and environmental "adjustments" to the center's plans (you have to wonder why it wasn't considered from the start), but I have a better idea, let's not build it at all.  Better still, if the conference center is such a good idea, why don't we put it to a vote to the county -- but somehow I don't think that's going to happen without a fight.

It isn't just about the conference center, it's about government run amuck, and not adhering to the will of "the many" who financially support that bloated institution.  The government is for the people, not for government, and certainly not for special interest.  The work being done to kill the the conference center is only part of a larger effort to de-fang an institution that has long lost it's focus and purpose.  You are supporting an institution that is a self-serving bastardization of what our founding fathers created and built this country on.  Honesty, hard work and integrity, you don't find those three elements in anything that has to do with government now-a-day.

How long do you think the people are going to tolerate your arrogance before it starts to show up in your bottom-line and might I remind you that "Arrogant is, what arrogant does."

I'm supporting Doug and any other commissioner that will kill the conference center and make policy decisions that represent the "majority" -- not special interest.  And you can count on me being there at that meeting November 28th to "...boo, hoot and clap" if it means doing the right thing.
