The Freedom Forum Letter to Rep. Joe ScarboroughFrom: Pat Baska CommentsI am posting this letter to Rep. Scarborough in the hopes that it may serve to embolden some of our fellow constituents to write letters of their own. Many of the varied evils besetting our country can be remedied simply by the people learning the principles that guided our Founders in creating the greatest form of government in recorded history, and then holding our elected officials in the House of Representatives to them. Through their power of the purse the House is the body that can de-fund these programs, and therefore end them. It is also the body most responsive to the people, exactly as intended by the Founding Fathers. Honorable Joe Scarborough 127 Cannon H.O.B. Washington, DC 20515 Dear Mr. Scarborough; Congratulations on your 5 stars in the Fall/Winter 2000-01 TRIM Bulletin (enclosed). It is good to see you at least partially understand your oath of office about upholding and defending the Constitution. We have far too many politicians in this country’s elected offices, and far too few statesmen who understand the principles behind the Constitution and are willing to stand up for them and the people, where all powers of the government originate. I wish to call your attention to the three X’s on the back page of the Bulletin. Vote #2, HR 4577: Fiscal 2001 Labor/HHS/Education. This entire bill has absolutely no authorization in the Constitution! How do you justify voting for it? This bill only passed by 3 votes. Yours and two others could have killed it. I understand the political “give and take” and the games that are played in our Congress, however it is high time they stopped. Our liberty and indeed our country require it. Vote #4, HR 4461: Fiscal 2001 Agriculture. This is nothing more than protectionism for the few, and is also entirely un-Constitutional. It goes against everything our Founding Fathers believed. I urge you to obtain and read the book “Economic Sophisms” by Frederic Bastiat. It is available from the Foundation for Economic Education. www.fee.org, and may aid in your understanding of the evils of protectionism. Vote #5, HR 4811: Fiscal 2001 Foreign Aid. Please inform me where in our Constitution you found the authority to vote in favor of this? As an attorney I am sure you are aware that the Constitution is a legal and binding document. Also, I am sure you are cognizant of “original intent” and it’s application. Just because you won’t be popular with your political party for insisting on following the rule of law doesn’t mean you can ignore it. Again, I thank you for the five Constitutional votes, and fervently hope to see all eight stars on your next spending report card. Sincerely ~signed~ Pat Baska mailto:pbaska@emcst.com The TRIM Bulletin is available at http://www.trimonline.org/ ______ Last changed: March 04, 2008
