BED TAX/CONFERENCE CENTER HISTORY OF EVENTS
- The Freedom Committee's goal is to repeal county ordinance 89-23 that has spawned the
Tourist Development Counsel (TDC) and bed tax (increase), and is also designed to fund the
proposed conference center. The TDC was created with this ordinance and therefore,
by law, will be disbanded with OR 89-23's repeal. In order to do this, a referendum must
come to a vote before the people.
There are four major areas on this website that are designed to do four
things:
1. Present the
FACTS supporting our case that
the Conference Center will be a financial burden to the taxpayers of Okaloosa County.
2. Provide a
HISTORY of the entire Bed Tax
increase/Conference Center and give an historical scope to the issue.
3. To present
OUR POINT OF
VIEW as an opponent of the Bed Tax Increase/Conference Center and it's
supporters.
4. To provide a
FORUM
in which others can share their point of view. |
I urge our readers to read another letter...
...this time from Ms. Krug, on the Freedom Forum.
Does any citizen out there feel so "vulnerable" that they can't reach an
intelligent decision about this issue?
This website is offered as a public forum; we publish the Opposition's letters
and comments. We've tried to offer both opinion and fact to support our positions.
If you'll read back over their comments, you'll find a lot of name calling and unfounded
accusations, and very few facts pertinent to the current discussion. A history of the TDC
does not answer several very pertinent questions about their unchecked operation.
We don't have to present this rude rhetoric to our readers, but it is so
indicative of their mindset that I welcome their arrival and presentation to you.
There's a lot going on in the County and in Destin; read tomorrow's paper. One
of the new condos in Destin is apparently demanding a 15' corridor along the shoreline as
our only access along the beach, and you can't stop or fish or picnic or sunbathe. Destin
is dead if that mean-spirited arrogance, led by newcomers, continues.
It seems that we get ever farther away from being fairly represented as
citizens. I believe that money influences many of these decisions-and power the rest
of them, only because there's no other rational answer to what's going on in this
County.
That's all the more reason to take a stand and show that we're fed up with the
selling of Okaloosa County. An unwanted Conference Center and an out-of-control TDC
are two good places to start the cleanup.
Cheers!
Gaylan
