Gaylan KingIraq 13 - November 03 2003 - I'm back in Kuwait for probably a week, watching the drama in Iraq like the rest of you.

We stay at the famous Palestine Hotel. On the morning I left, about 60 members of the Italian Red Cross were in the lobby with their baggage waiting to go to the airport. A cameraman came up and started filming them. My friend, Luigi, University of Michigan, very good English, went up to the camera man and said, "Whatever you do, don't give the world the impression that the Red Cross is pulling out of Iraq; that just isn't true. We've been here for our allotted time and are returning home; our replacements arrive tomorrow. We are not abandoning Baghdad!"

I entered my apartment in Kuwait, dropped my bags and turned on the BBC.

"RED CROSS ABANDONS BELEAGUERED CITY!", screamed the headline. I saw all of my Italian friends in the film, even Luigi, who had begged that the truth be told. And, so it goes.

I'm becoming concerned that the lies will outweigh the truth, that our resolve isn't as strong as it used to be. With an election year to come and the President's numbers slipping, the catastrophe might just be beginning.

I'm sorry that all of you can't know the vitality and basic honesty of the average Iraqi. I'm sorry that we, the best educated people in the world, are so dependent on the liberal "spinners" (a polite word for, "liars") for our most important information.

As for me, I look forward to returning to Iraq and further experiencing it's seductive charm.

History is in the making there, and I'll share it with you.

Cheers!
Gaylan
