BED TAX/CONFERENCE CENTER HISTORY OF EVENTS
- The Freedom Committee's goal is to repeal county ordinance 89-23 that has spawned the
Tourist Development Counsel (TDC) and bed tax (increase), and is also designed to fund the
proposed conference center. The TDC was created with this ordinance and therefore,
by law, will be disbanded with OR 89-23's repeal. In order to do this, a referendum must
come to a vote before the people.
There are four major areas on this website that are designed to do four
things:
1. Present the
FACTS supporting our case that
the Conference Center will be a financial burden to the taxpayers of Okaloosa County.
2. Provide a
HISTORY of the entire Bed Tax
increase/Conference Center and give an historical scope to the issue.
3. To present
OUR POINT OF
VIEW as an opponent of the Bed Tax Increase/Conference Center and it's
supporters.
4. To provide a
FORUM
in which others can share their point of view. |
It's Time To Stand Up And Be Counted! -
Thursday Oct. 7 1999, As most of you know, our petition has been in the NWFDN
twice in this week. We have enough support to do this until we get the required 4000
signatures. We'll actually submit 5000 signatures that we have pre-verified against the
county voting records, a tedious job. We'll later have to pay the Supervisor of Elections
Office 10 cents a name to verify them, again. We'll go through the additional pain of
checking them ourselves so we can label them as checked, before submission. In that
way, if the BOCC has any problem with the number of valid signatures, we'll have some
insurance against "mischief", if you will.
With that said, I beg all of you to submit your signed and witnessed petition so
that we can get on with it. We're getting a good return, but I'm still getting petitions
from the mail out from over three weeks ago. When I think about how we'll all have to turn
out on the same day to vote in the referendum, this display of indifference tracks right
along with our 10%-16% voting average, county wide.
The Freedom Committee has labored long and hard to bring all of us the
opportunity to right a couple of wrongs by causing a legal referendum. I'm not chiding
you, I know that many of our readers were among the first to respond. We ask that you call
your friends and neighbors and tell them it's their turn to act.
They'll never have a better chance to make a difference, but it's time
to act!
Cheers!
