The man with a
thick, probably middle-European accent...

Today, we were taking petition signatures, as we have for a
week or more, at the Destin post office. A man with a thick, probably
middle-European accent, angrily told us that the Post Office was Federal Property, and
that we couldn't take petition names there. We told him we had permission from the
Postmaster; he marched right in and complained. He then came back and started being
belligerent again. He demanded to know if I was running for the County Commission next
year. I told him that I hadn't filed yet, but that I intended to run for the District 5
seat. This made him even more furious. He said that if I was going to run next
year, I had no business forming the Freedom Committee and being against the Conference
Center/TDC. He stormed off swearing that he'd see to it that I was not
elected.
Aren't life's little ironies wonderful? The man was probably not born in the
USA. He probably came to this free country as a child and enjoys all of it's
benefits. But, he's unwilling to let me fairly exercise my rights as a citizen to change
something which I can't abide. He then made some unintelligible comment about Hwy 98
being filled with trash and we weren't doing anything about THAT (now he's telling me what
I should do). We choose to remove political trash, as is our right. So much
for political freedom in Okaloosa County.
The oppositions latest farce is that I am doing this project for political gain;
that I have no honest feeling about this issue. I honestly believe a POLITICIAN wouldn't
touch this brawl for fear of damage; that he'd remain safely on the sidelines. I've
been issued a challenge stating that they'll consider my intentions in this issue to be
pure ONLY if I don't run next year. Go figure! I apparently don't have the
right to have a brain and to use it outside of their agenda.
As many of you know, the Post Office experienced several days of phone calls,
probably a planned effort, objecting to our collecting signatures there; they apparently
saw the number of people at our tables. The Post Office very politely asked us to
leave, and we did.
This is the quality of the opposition, folks; I suspect that they've just begun
to show their true colors.

P.S. The incident with the man at the Destin
Post Office has gurgled around in my head for days; I couldn't shake it. Then, this
afternoon while driving for hours, bumper-to-bumper with strangers, it hit me. After
complaining inside, he came back out and proceeded to tell me that we had to leave.
I finally told him to go away, that I'd heard his whole deal and didn't want to hear it
over and over. He angrily shouted, " I can stand here and argue with you all
afternoon if I want to; this is federal property and I can do anything I want to do,
here!" Remember, this was after he'd told me that I had NO rights there
because it was federal property. GET THIS; it's important! They
know better; they get one set of rules, we get another. They always know best, and we're
to be treated like errant children when we disappoint them. I suspect that they're in for
a lot of disappointment.
Cheers!
